Do I have to wear a pressure stocking after Calf Reduction Surgery?
Nerves always run with blood vessels. So, bruises may form and legs may swell when the nerves are interrupted since the related blood vessels are interrupted as well. Preventing such a thing is one of the reasons why the patient has to wear pressure stocking. Another reason is that pressure stocking helps a calf muscles to be shrunk in a good form during the treatment period, for calf muscles are no more stuck steadily to the calf like it used to be after the surgery.
Wearing pressure stocking will not occur any problem related to blood circulation since the blood circulates deep in the lower extremity. Still, taking off the stocking and raising the legs while sleeping will help the recovery more. |

Is there any possibility of relapse after Calf Reduction Surgery?
It is up to the regeneration of nerves. To think about the cases where bones or skin being recovered from injuries, there is a possibility of relapse if nerves are regenerated after the surgery. However, this chance of nerve regeneration is less likely to happen and usually requires long period of time.
GIO Surgeons is putting the best effort to lower this possibility by cutting the nerves longitudinally and interrupting the same nerves more than twice. |

How does Calf Reduction Surgery processed in GIO Surgeons?
Calf muscles can be basically divided into two parts; the Soleus and the Gastrocnemius. GIO’s Calf Reduction Surgery is not directly practiced on calf muscles but on the motor nerves, interrupting them within small area by using low-temperature thermal injury. Remaining soleus, which is responsible for 80% of calf movement, and selectively interrupting the motor nerves moving into Gastrocnemius, results in a successful calf reduction and an accompanying results as well. |

Is it always necessary to have antibiotic treatment for a wound?
Antibiotic injection before, during and after surgery for preventive purpose is called preioperative antibiotic therapy.
The purpose of preventive antibiotic therapy ① The immune systems of a human body becomes weakened due to trauma or surgery. Therefore, an antibiotic given before surgery can prevent bacteria coming in through a traumatic or surgical cut from forming colony. ② After fibrino-gen contained in the effusion flowing out from a cut surrounds bacteria, it will be difficult for antibiotics to penetrate. That is why an antibiotic should be injected first.
There are still controversies about the benefits of preventive antibiotic therapy and the abuse of it can rather cultivate resistant resistant bacteria. However, when a gush is easy to get infected, say, wound occurred inside a mouth or near anus; a cut that is wider or longer than 5cm; a cut formed by animal's bite; or a patient with rheumatic heart disease or artificial cardiac valve, antibiotics is used to prevent infection. In case the source bacterium of infection is not certain, it is very hard to know and use which antibiotics is appropriate for preventive purpose.
These days, when an antibiotic is used for the purpose of preventive antibiotic therapy, a short-effective and small dosage of an antibiotic are preferred to long-effect and a large dosage of one. It is to give negative effect less on endogenous flora. |

B) If a patient has had tetanus toxin injection more than two times before and he or she had the last injection 10 years ago

How should I take care of scars after tattoo surgery?
Scar may occur from either damage to epidermis or dermis. Epidermal damage (scar) can be cured by self-treatment to some extent; dermal damage is hard to recover by itself. Furthermore, frequent motions of damaged area and excessive skin stimulation can cause protruding hypertrophic scar. In this case, you are advised to seek for specialized treatment in a hospital. A tattoo (removal) patient should keep himself away from UV-rays and physical stimulation and the treated area clean. A general bandage is used to prevent the treated area from external infection and irritation. However the long closure of the area is not good, so the patient needs to change bandage after cleaning and disinfect the treated area. When a patient uses moist dressing agent or ointment, he or she is advised to read the instruction carefully and apply it to the treat area properly according to the instruction.

How can I deal with a developed scar that makes me worried?
* Infection Prevention
When a scar develops, the first thing to do is to prevent it from being infected from contaminant sources. Mostly a disinfectant is used. Be careful not to use irritant disinfectant. Use a mild one. In case that a disinfectant is not available, let the scar be washed with running water.
* Hemostasis After preventing a scar from being infected, you need to stop blooding from the surface of a scar. It is good to place bleeding part higher than heart. You can use one of the following three hemostasis methods. (1) Direct Compression Method In case bleeding originates from skin surface, not from blood vessel, directly apply pressure on the blood area with clean cloth or gauze. (2) Indirect Compression Method In case blood vessel is wounded so blood comes from it, find and press down the vessel(s) from which blood comes from heart among blood vessels around a heart. (3) Compression with Tourniquet Method In case that both direct and indirect compression methods can't stop blooding, tie and fix the damaged area close to a heart with cloth or a strip. And support it with a stick or such and tie it again. Twist the stick to tighten the strip. * Move the patient to a hospital as quickly as possible for treatment from a medical specialist. |

What is hypertrophic scar and Keloid ?
-Hypertrophic Scar Hypertrophic scars often occur from the cause of injury, wrong treatment or depending on the location of injury. The scope of a scar is confined to wounded area. Most of protruding scars subside about 6-18 months after injury occurs.
- Keloid Scar It often occurs due to a constitutional reason. A small injury can leave a big Keloid scar. As this scar is easy to spread beyond a wounded area, a bigger scar can be left than the original size of the injury. Protruding Keloid scar won't subside even after time passes and rather it expands further to a normal skin.
Caution Be careful not to have a wound. Once wounded, you'd better get treatment as soon as possible. |

I have a wound on my face. So I am worrying it may turn into a scar. Should I go to dermatology or plastic surgery?
We sometimes meet patients who have been treated in dermatology for facial wound but returned to us because the wound wasn’t cured. A wound means the state of skin of which structure is destroyed. Therefore, it is very important to understand the destroyed structure, decide the procedure of restoration and restore it anatomically. So it is the best and safest way to get treated early in a plastic surgery if you don’t want ugly scars later. A plastic surgery clinic is familiar to surgical treatment and has full anatomical and hysiological knowledge in the whole process of a scar development and management.
